Newington Reserve’s $17.5 million transformation was officially opened on Wednesday, 9 September, giving local football players more opportunities to train and compete in all weather conditions.
The upgraded reserve features a synthetic sports field, a new sports pavilion, outdoor fitness equipment and barbecue facilities, alongside improved parking and landscaping.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter said the project reflected residents’ vision for accessible facilities that support grassroots sport and bring the community together.
“Newington Reserve is our newest premier sport and recreation destination that local families in Newington, Silverwater and surrounds can enjoy for many years to come,” Cr Zaiter said.
“We’ve worked with the community to deliver a high-quality recreational space that is accessible, modern and supports local sports participation.”
More opportunities for local football
NSW Minister for Sport Steve Kamper said the new facilities would allow local players and clubs to train and compete throughout the year, while giving families a place to stay active close to home.
“Investing in grassroots sport is an investment in healthier, more connected communities, and the NSW Government is proud to support projects that deliver these benefits for years to come,” he said.
Football NSW CEO John Tsatsimas said the opening demonstrated the value of collaboration between government and sporting organisations as football participation grows across the state.
“Football continues to experience significant growth across NSW, and facilities such as Newington Reserve are vital in ensuring players of all ages and abilities have access to high-quality, safe and inclusive environments to play and develop,” he said.
Community input shapes the upgrade
According to the council’s release, nearly 70 per cent of respondents to consultation on the proposed upgrade supported the project. Residents highlighted the need for new sporting facilities, additional recreation opportunities and a dedicated home for local football clubs.
More than 63 per cent supported outdoor fitness equipment, while around 61 per cent backed synthetic turf.
The field uses an organic timber-based infill in place of traditional rubber. Council said the combination of dual fibres and wood infill was designed to deliver a surface that feels and responds more like natural grass while balancing sporting use with environmental considerations.
The new pavilion includes home and away change rooms with integrated showers and toilets, public toilets and a kiosk facing the field.
The project was funded by the City of Parramatta and the NSW Government’s Office of Sport, with a $20,000 contribution from Football NSW.
