South Australia’s Chief Public Health Officer, Nicola Spurrier, has shared her harrowing experience of being struck by a car while cycling. The incident occurred on October 25 last year and left her with multiple fractures, including three pelvic fractures, a broken rib, and an injured shoulder that required two operations to fix. According to ABC News, Spurrier recounted the moment of the crash, stating that she feared for her life and thought about the impact on her three children.

During National Road Safety Week, Spurrier emphasized the importance of road safety and urged drivers to be more considerate towards cyclists. She described the collision vividly, recalling how she felt as if she was flying over the car’s bonnet and landing four meters away in excruciating pain. Her recovery has taken seven months and is still ongoing.

The timing of Spurrier’s message coincides with a recent road fatality in the Adelaide Hills, where a 39-year-old motorcyclist was killed. This year, South Australia has seen a concerning rise in road deaths, with 44 fatalities reported so far, compared to 30 at the same time last year. Authorities are urging all road users to prioritize safety and avoid reckless behavior.

Superintendent Shane Johnson from SA Police has echoed Spurrier’s sentiments, highlighting that every road death represents a person and a family affected. He has called on drivers to refrain from taking risks on the road, particularly during this critical safety awareness week.
