According to BBC News, Frances Tiafoe recovered from two sets and a break down to defeat fellow American Alex Michelsen and reach the US Open semi-finals. The 11th seed won 5-7 3-6 7-5 6-3 7-6 (10-6) after four hours and 38 minutes.
World number 46 Michelsen controlled the early stages, taking the first set after securing the deciding break at 6-5. He hit 15 winners in that set to Tiafoe’s four, then won the second set and moved a break ahead early in the third.
Michelsen was serving for the match at 5-4 in the third set when the momentum changed. He served two double faults, allowing Tiafoe to break back, before Tiafoe claimed the set and won the opening three games of the fourth. In a deciding set featuring multiple breaks of serve, Tiafoe prevailed in the 10-point tie-break.
“In the end I slowly started to get my rhythm. Snuck out that third set and got better and better,” Tiafoe said. “He’s a hell of a player and he easily could have won today. Shout out to Alex Michelsen.” Michelsen, 22, was playing in his first Grand Slam quarter-final and was in tears as the pair embraced at the net.
The 28-year-old Tiafoe has reached his third US Open semi-final in five years and will next face defending champion Carlos Alcaraz or American eighth seed Ben Shelton. He is seeking his first final at Flushing Meadows after semi-final defeats to Alcaraz in 2022 and Taylor Fritz in 2024.
