According to ABC News, Leading Senior Constable Steven Hyde will remain with NSW Police after a District Court judge found him guilty of assaulting a man who was being wheeled into Blacktown Hospital on a gurney. The judge did not record a conviction and imposed a 12-month good behaviour bond.

The incident occurred in the hospital’s emergency department in November 2023 after Hyde and Constable Talaisai Alo attended a Western Sydney home, where they found the man unconscious following a suspected drug overdose. Paramedics roused him and took him to hospital for observation. He was not under arrest, but the officers escorted him there.

Hospital CCTV, obtained by ABC News, showed the man being wheeled into the ambulance bay with his legs strapped to the gurney. He held a vape and a water bottle. After Hyde confiscated the vape, the man threw the bottle over his shoulder, and Hyde hit him in the side of the head. Alo then restrained the man before body-worn camera audio began recording.

Hyde was charged with assault and had said in a written statement that he acted in self-defence, believing he had been assaulted after feeling something strike his shoulder and back. He was first found guilty in the Local Court, then appealed the conviction and sentence. Alo has not been charged. NSW Police said Hyde was subject to management action in June, including a loss of rank, two years of restricted duties and retraining under a management plan.
