Former US president Barack Obama and New York mayor Zohran Mamdani met for the first time on Saturday at a Bronx childcare center, where they engaged with preschoolers by reading and singing. The event featured the reading of the book “Alone and Together” and a sing-along of “The Wheels on the Bus.” This gathering marked an effort to foster a collaborative relationship between the two leaders.

According to The Guardian, Mamdani, who marked his 100th day in office just over a week earlier, is a democratic socialist focused on making New York City more affordable for its residents. His agenda aims to redirect government resources to support the city’s struggling working class.

While Mamdani has been building his political presence, he has also been engaging with former President Donald Trump. The mayor has met with Trump twice to discuss issues pertinent to New York, although their relationship has recently faced challenges. Trump criticized Mamdani’s tax policies on social media, claiming they were “DESTROYING New York” and threatened to pull federal funding for the city.

Despite these tensions, Mamdani described his interactions with Trump as “honest, direct, and productive” during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” He emphasized their shared commitment to the welfare of New York City, highlighting the complexities of navigating political relationships in a divided environment.
