Ocado Group is planning to cut 1,000 jobs, about 5% of its global workforce, over the coming year as part of a cost-cutting initiative. According to BBC News, the company’s CEO, Tim Steiner, indicated that a “significant number” of roles will no longer be needed as part of a restructuring process.

About two-thirds of the job cuts will be in the UK, with most coming at its headquarters in Hatfield, Hertfordshire. Ocado currently employs about 20,000 people worldwide, with the vast majority in the UK.

Ocado provides technology to supermarket distribution centers and operates an online grocery business in partnership with Marks & Spencer. The company faced a challenging year, particularly after its North American partners, Kroger in the US and Sobeys in Canada, announced the closure of centers run by Ocado.

The restructuring is expected to yield cost savings of about £150 million, primarily impacting tech and support teams. Steiner acknowledged the unfortunate necessity of these changes, stating that they reflect the lower structural cost base that has been signalled over recent years. He assured that support will be provided to those impacted through this process.
