According to BBC News, New York Democratic congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has said she is freezing her eggs and has not ruled out a possible run for president in 2028. The 36-year-old shared clips of the start of the fertility process on social media on Sunday, before discussing her political future in an interview with ABC News This Week.
In the videos, Ocasio-Cortez showed herself taking an injection and described tips she had learned. She also addressed questions about costs, clinical procedures, storage and fertility care in what she called the United States’ “broken” medical system.
She said she wanted to “normalise” conversations about egg freezing, particularly in the current political environment. Ocasio-Cortez said the administration was denying reproductive care to women across the country, from abortion rights to the ability to carry out a healthy pregnancy. She said leaders should have such conversations and share these processes, while an earlier Instagram post said there was a “political risk” in sharing the information.
Asked about a potential presidential campaign after being shown polling on her popularity as a candidate, Ocasio-Cortez said she was focused on winning the midterms and her current congressional race. Pressed on whether a White House bid remained possible, she said: “I haven’t ruled out the possibility,” adding that she was humbled by the support. Asked separately about a possible Senate challenge to minority leader Chuck Schumer, she said “anything was possible.” The midterms are due in early November, with all 435 House seats and a third of the 100 Senate seats contested.
