As the countdown to the Paris 2024 Olympics begins, Canterbury-Bankstown’s seniors will be battling it out in a range of activities of their own.
Martial arts, pickle ball, walking basketball and walking football are just some of the competitive, low impact sports on offer in City of Canterbury Bankstown’s Term Two Active Seniors program, running from 29 April-5 July.
And on Monday 1 July, hundreds of seniors will get into the Olympic spirit, take part in activities and try new sports at the CBCity Active Seniors Games.
Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Bilal El-Hayek said with nearly a quarter of residents aged 55 years and older, the program aims to support local seniors in keeping healthy and active.
“It’s so important our seniors keep fit and healthy and get involved in activities they enjoy, so we’ve made sure to schedule something for everyone,” Mayor El-Hayek said.
“Age is no barrier to participation, and I encourage all seniors in our City to check out the offerings and get involved.”
The Active Seniors Program also includes a variety of activities that encourage seniors to socialise and support their mental and emotional wellbeing including book clubs, meditation workshops and chair yoga.
A Memory Lane Cafe will provide friendship and support for people living with a dementia diagnosis, while All Aboard the Memory Train – Soft Pastels workshops will provide fun and relaxing stimulation for those experiencing dementia.
The Meals on Wheels Community Restaurant is also back every second Tuesday at Greenacre Senior Citizens Centre for a healthy lunch and a fun day out with friends.
