Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi met with United States Vice President JD Vance in Washington, DC, on Friday to discuss ongoing nuclear negotiations involving Iran. According to Al Jazeera, Al Busaidi, a key mediator in these talks, noted that significant, important, and unprecedented progress had been made in recent discussions.
The meeting focused on the indirect negotiations mediated by Oman, following a recent round of talks held in Geneva. The U.S. has expressed a desire for Iran to dismantle its nuclear infrastructure entirely and limit its ballistic missile capabilities, while also halting support for regional allies. Although Iran has shown some willingness to discuss uranium enrichment for civilian purposes, it remains firm on its missile program and proxy support.
Al Busaidi described the negotiations as yielding “creative and constructive ideas and proposals.” This dialogue takes place against a backdrop of increasing fears of a potential U.S. military strike on Iran, as tensions in the region escalate.
In related developments, the U.S. has authorized the departure of nonemergency embassy staff from Israel, mirroring a previous order issued for the U.S. mission in Lebanon. Other countries, including China, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Italy, have also advised their citizens to leave Iran in light of the heightened tensions.
