According to ABC News, One Nation has won its first seat in Western Australia’s lower house after Luke Herdegen secured the Secret Harbour by-election. The outer-suburban electorate had been held by Labor for almost 20 years.

With 74.5 per cent of ballots counted, Mr Herdegen had just over 57 per cent of the two-party preferred vote, compared with almost 43 per cent for Labor candidate Georgia Tree. He said One Nation would seek to form government at the 2029 state election, describing the result as the beginning of a “huge shift” among voters.

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson thanked WA Liberal leader Basil Zempilas for directing preferences to her party, calling him a “man of vision and common sense”. The Liberals placed One Nation third on their how-to-vote cards, after the Australian Christians. Mr Zempilas acknowledged the preferences helped One Nation win but rejected claims that the Liberals had run dead in the campaign. He said the party’s 17 per cent vote was below its desired level.

Premier Roger Cook dismissed Mr Herdegen’s plans as “arrogance” and “hubris”, saying Labor respected the community and did not take voters for granted. Mines Minister Daniel Pastorelli said Labor had underestimated One Nation and must do better. Labor holds 45 seats in the Legislative Assembly, while the Liberals hold seven, the Nationals six and One Nation one.
