Following the Opposition Leader Angus Taylor’s federal Budget Reply speech on 14 May 2026, Oz Arab Media was among a select group of media organisations invited by the Opposition Leader to further dissect the Budget Reply commitments.
The Budget represents one of the most significant tax reforms, including changes to the capital gains tax, negative gearing and discretionary trust taxation. Just a few months in, it has caused large repercussions in the Australian property market.
This briefing now provided an opportunity to hear directly from the Opposition Leader on the Coalition’s economic alternative and his vision for a fairer, freer and better Australia.
Alternative tax reform plan
The Opposition Leader says he is concerned with the Australians’ ‘loss of aspirations’ and deteriorating standard of living.
Calling it a ‘generational tax reform,’ the Coalition vows to index Australia’s tax brackets to inflation from 2028-29, aiming to combat bracket creep and delivering much-needed savings to workers.
Commitment to repeal property tax changes
The Opposition Leader has reaffirmed his ‘absolute’ commitment to repeal Labor’s changes to negative gearing, capital gains tax and trusts outlined in the Budget.
‘These taxes are bad for the housing market, bad for savings, bad for investment, bad for families and bad for businesses, so we will take to the election an unambiguous policy of repealing those taxes.’
Migration and multicultural communities
The Coalition plans to cut migration by capping migrant intake to the number of new homes being built, and restrict welfare for non-citizens.
The Opposition Leader’s own electorate of Hume in South-West Sydney has a growing number of multicultural communities, including Arab Australians.
When asked how the Coalition plans to meet its economic priorities whilst cutting migration, the Opposition Leader emphasises that he firmly believes in the ‘migration success story’ but there needs to be ‘balance.’
Overall, the Opposition Leader has outlined an economic vision that supports hard work, rewards aspiration and restores confidence to invest and build.
He has also acknowledged and thanked Arab-Australians for their contributions to Australia.
