According to Cnbc, Oracle on Tuesday announced an expanded collaboration with OpenAI that will bring ChatGPT and Codex into Oracle’s application stack. Oracle said the additions are intended to make databases more actionable and extend enterprise access to OpenAI tools.
Mahesh Thiagarajan, Oracle’s president of Cloud Infrastructure, said at Oracle AI World in Las Vegas that ChatGPT “allows anybody to build an application, deploy it, manage it.” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was set to join Oracle co-CEO Clay Magouyrk for a keynote on Tuesday at 12:40 p.m. ET.
Oracle also said its cloud infrastructure will add Google tensor processing units, OpenAI’s Jalapeño chip and Cerebras hardware. Thiagarajan said customers can use different accelerators as chip scarcity continues, while adding that Nvidia chips remain “the best, most fungible.” The Google arrangement marks the first time the company’s custom chips will run on another hyperscaler’s cloud.
Thiagarajan said his team observed OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra model being trained at Oracle’s Stargate data center campus in Abilene, Texas. Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s president and co-founder, said more businesses are choosing OpenAI as it becomes easier to put AI to work through tools and systems they already use.
Oracle shares were up nearly 5% on Tuesday, while Cerebras stock climbed about 8% following the news. Oracle is also developing Project Jupiter, a data center in New Mexico that has faced local pushback; a hearing on air-quality permitting is scheduled for Dec. 7 in Sunland Park. Oracle maintains that the project remains on schedule.
