On 7 September 2024, Sydney’s Seymour Centre Theatre was captivated by the enchanting sounds of “Orphalese 101,” a concert by the Andalus Arabic Choir that took audiences on an extraordinary journey into the heart of classical Arabic music. Spearheaded by the visionary founder and conductor, Ghada Daher Elmowy, the evening was a resounding success, celebrating the deep cultural heritage of Arabic music. Elmowy’s dedication to preserving and revitalising this timeless art form was clear in every moment of the performance, leaving an indelible impression on all in attendance.

Adding to the grandeur of the evening was the presence of distinguished guests, including the Lebanese Ambassador to Australia, H.E. Miled Raad, and his wife. Their attendance underscored the cultural significance of the event, highlighting the deep ties between the Lebanese community and the celebration of Arabic music in Australia. Ambassador Raad’s presence was a testament to the importance of preserving and promoting classical Arabic music on a global stage, and it added a special layer of honour to the night.

The presence of Dr Lucia Sorbera, Chair of Arabic Language & Cultures at the University of Sydney further underscored the value and esteem of the event. Her attendanced showed how such an event can showcase the beauty and the value of the Arabic culture in the grand scheme of Australia.

Under Elmowy’s expert direction, the choir performed a series of meticulously selected pieces, each offering a glimpse into the soul of classical Arabic music. The concert was not only a tribute to the traditions of the past, celebrating 101 years of Gibran’s “The Prophet”, but also a celebration of the evolving future of this rich musical heritage. Elmowy’s passion was evident as she seamlessly guided the musicians and the choir through dynamic compositions, creating an unforgettable auditory experience for all.

The evening’s performance was further enhanced by the stunning visual design, with lighting and stage effects that complemented the music’s emotional depth. This included a wide array of Gibran’s paintings displayed in the background slides, which added an artistic depth to the event. The combined power of sound and sight created an immersive experience that resonated with the diverse audience, drawing them deeper into the beauty of the performance.

“Orphalese 101” was a triumph, not just as a musical event, but as a cultural gathering that brought together different generations and backgrounds in appreciation of classical Arabic music. Under Ghada Daher Elmowy’s leadership, paired with the presence of notable figures like H.E.
