The Oscars’ In Memoriam segment has once again sparked controversy, with notable omissions including Brigitte Bardot, TV stars James Van Der Beek and Malcolm-Jamal Warner, and the celebrated Bollywood actor Dharmendra. Critics have voiced their frustrations on social media, questioning the criteria used to determine who is honored. According to The Guardian, this year’s ceremony highlighted the ongoing challenges the Academy faces in selecting names for the tribute.
The In Memoriam segment, introduced in 1994, has a history of sparking outcry over omissions. This year, the absence of several prominent figures was particularly striking, especially given the segment’s expanded format, which included 34 names and special tributes to notable industry figures. Critics often suggest neglect or forgetfulness as reasons for these exclusions, but the selection process is complex and involves a committee that carefully reviews a long list of candidates.
Brigitte Bardot’s omission has drawn specific attention, complicated by her controversial status in France, where her recent appearances have been met with backlash. Speculation suggests the Academy may have chosen to exclude her to avoid a similar reaction at the Dolby Theatre. Personal conduct is believed to influence the committee’s decisions, as seen with Alain Delon’s omission last year due to his past behavior.
Space constraints also play a significant role in determining who is included. With numerous industry deaths each year, the limited time allocated for the segment means not everyone can be honored. The Academy also considers the nature of a figure’s work, leading to decisions that can seem arbitrary. For instance, Farrah Fawcett was omitted despite her film appearances, while Michael Jackson was included despite a limited film career.
As the Academy navigates these challenging decisions, it remains clear that the In Memoriam segment will continue to evoke differing opinions. As Gilbert Cates, the segment’s originator, famously noted, any choice made will likely displease a portion of viewers.
