The RSPCA has reported the rescue of more than 250 poodle-cross dogs found living in cramped conditions in a single home in the UK. The animal welfare charity stated that the situation had escalated due to extenuating family circumstances, leading to a rapid increase in the number of dogs at the location.
According to BBC News, the RSPCA also addressed claims circulating on social media that a shocking image of the dogs was AI-generated. The charity emphasized that the photo reflects the grim reality of multi-animal situations they are increasingly encountering.
RSPCA Superintendent Jo Hirst highlighted that incidents involving large numbers of animals have surged by 70% in England and Wales since 2021. In the past year, the charity responded to 4,200 such incidents – which involve at least 10 animals at the same address.
The RSPCA noted that the issues of over-breeding and overwhelming ownership often stem from mental health struggles and economic challenges. The popularity of poodle-cross dogs, known as “doodles,” has significantly increased, contributing to the rising number of such incidents.
Of the 250 dogs rescued, 87 were taken in by the RSPCA, while the remainder went to the Dogs Trust. The RSPCA has begun the rehoming process for some of the dogs, including two named Stevie and Sandy, who are currently awaiting adoption at the Southridge Animal Centre.
