Palestinian detainee becomes 66th to die in Israeli custody
A Palestinian detainee has died in Israeli custody following months of medical neglect, the Palestinian Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoners Society are reporting.
According to the groups, 60-year-old Mohyee al-Din Fahmi Najem suffered from chronic illnesses and was denied proper medical treatment during his detention.
The father of six had spent nearly two decades in Israeli prisons and was last detained on 8 August 2023, when he was placed in administrative detention without charge or trial.
The commission and the prisoners’ society said the Israeli prison authorities had committed the “compound crime” of arbitrary detention and medical negligence.
They reported that Najem’s health had deteriorated dramatically in the last few months, noting that he was unable to walk without assistance during a prison visit in March. He was not informed of a diagnosis from subsequent medical examinations.
Najem is the 66th detainee to have died since October 2023.
