Residents of the Aboriginal community of Papunya have initiated legal action against the Northern Territory Government, claiming unsafe housing conditions during extreme heat. This unprecedented lawsuit seeks to address decades of government neglect regarding public housing in remote areas, particularly as temperatures in Papunya regularly exceed 40 degrees.

According to SBS News, four residents, represented by the Human Rights Law Centre, lodged a claim with the Federal Court this week. They argue that inadequate housing, built over thirty years ago, lacks essential insulation, shading, or air conditioning, exacerbating health risks during heatwaves.

Ashley Robertson, a resident and one of the applicants, highlighted the dire living conditions, stating that many homes are rundown and unsuitable for the increasingly harsh summers. He mentioned the financial burden placed on families as they struggle to keep their homes cool, often resorting to sleeping outside during extreme heat.

Garrard Anderson, another resident, expressed frustration over the government’s lack of response to the housing crisis in Papunya. He emphasized the need for collaboration with Aboriginal communities to create culturally appropriate and sustainable housing solutions that can withstand the climate challenges of the region.

Human Rights Law Centre Senior Lawyer Jack McLean criticized the Northern Territory Government for failing to address the urgent needs of families in remote communities. He urged for immediate action to invest in climate-safe housing and to mitigate emissions, as the climate crisis continues to worsen.
