Parents and students rallied outside a Queensland high school, urging immediate action against bullying, which they describe as a widespread issue impacting every school. According to ABC News, more than a hundred individuals gathered to voice their concerns regarding what they termed “relentless” bullying.
Among the rally’s organizers, Amy Thomas shared her distress over her 12-year-old daughter, who has reportedly faced both physical and verbal bullying since beginning high school. Thomas recounted incidents where her daughter was assaulted with slushies and rocks, as well as being threatened online. She criticized the lack of consequences for the bullies, stating that children are suffering as a result.
The Queensland Department of Education responded to the rally by asserting that claims of the school failing to address bullying are “false.” A spokesperson emphasized that bullying is treated seriously and that security measures are in place. They also mentioned that police have been contacted regarding safety concerns stemming from social media activity related to the rally.
David Thomas, Amy’s husband, highlighted the broader nature of the bullying issue, claiming that he has received numerous reports from parents, teachers, and students across various schools in the region. He indicated that the problem extends beyond just one institution, suggesting a systemic issue.
Other parents, such as Sharna Cochrane, echoed similar sentiments, expressing frustration over the perceived inaction from the school despite repeated reports of bullying incidents. Local MP Nigel Hutton emphasized the importance of addressing bullying and stated he is working with various stakeholders to find effective solutions, reiterating that everyone deserves to feel safe in their educational environment.
