Parramatta’s rich heritage is at the heart of a newly adopted strategy that will guide how the City’s stories, landmarks and traditions are preserved and shared for generations to come.

The newly adopted Integrated Heritage Strategy charts a 10-year course to protect and celebrate Parramatta’s unique heritage, recognising First Nations history, preserving significant places and stories, and strengthening community connections to the City’s past.

City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter said the strategy recognises heritage as much more than old buildings.

“Our heritage connects us to the people, places and cultures that have shaped Parramatta and helps ensure those stories continue to be told for future generations,” Cr Zaiter said.

“As one of Australia’s oldest cities, it’s important we have a clear roadmap for preserving Parramatta’s heritage while creating opportunities for people to learn about our shared history.

“We also know that our City’s heritage is very important to many residents and visitors with the strategy receiving strong support from the community.”

The Integrated Heritage Strategy highlights opportunities to make heritage more accessible and engaging through interpretation, events, walking and cycling trails, educational programs and partnerships with community organisations.

The strategy forms part of Council’s Comprehensive Heritage Review Program, a long-term initiative that will include future studies into local history, Aboriginal heritage, archaeology, heritage items and heritage conservation areas.
