According to ABC News, Perth father Sandy Spratt has received Western Australia’s Royal Life Saving Bravery Award after rescuing his three-year-old daughter, Adaleena, from drowning in a backyard pool in Broome.
Spratt, 25, was holidaying in Broome, 2,080 kilometres north of Perth, in August 2025 when he visited a family member’s home with his two young daughters. The children had been playing near a gated pool when their sudden silence alerted him.
He ran to the pool and found Adaleena unconscious and floating face down in the water. Spratt pulled her out and began CPR, bringing her back to consciousness before paramedics arrived. She later made a full recovery after spending time at Broome Hospital.
Spratt said first aid training from a previous job meant he knew how to respond. He is using the recognition to encourage others to take first aid courses, including CPR training. “Doing a first aid course really does save lives and is worth every bit,” he said.
Royal Life Saving WA said unfamiliar aquatic environments on holidays can create unexpected risks for children and make supervision particularly important. Chief executive Peter Leaversuch said the awards demonstrated how valuable lifesaving skills can be in an emergency. Spratt was among 84 West Australians recognised at the 2026 awards on Friday.
