According to ABC News, Perth retiree Esther Fischer, 75, has set a Guinness World Record as the world’s oldest person to perform a handstand.

Fischer completed the feat on August 31, holding an unassisted handstand for 55 seconds. The record required her to maintain the position for at least 15 seconds without assistance, and the achievement was certified this week.

She said the idea emerged during coffee with friends after they discussed who held the record. Their research found that it belonged to a 74-year-old man in the United States, and Fischer believed she could meet the challenge.

Fischer said learning to perform a handstand took three years. She had been a member of her gym for 10 years and began her fitness journey later in life, having not been a gymnast or athlete in her youth.

Gym owner Jacob Moffitt said Fischer’s achievement helped inspire a longevity class for people aged 60 and over. Fischer is now working towards a one-arm handstand, a skill she said she has been practising for two years.
