According to ABC News, police have arrested Peter O’Ryan, 48, after he was allegedly on the run since Saturday following an axe attack on family members at a home in Tyers, in Victoria’s east.

Police allege Mr O’Ryan assaulted his brother, Paul O’Ryan, his father, Keith O’Ryan, and his mother, Janine O’Ryan, with the weapon before leaving the property on foot. He was arrested on Tuesday night after officers responded to reports of a person acting suspiciously near Tyers-Walhalla Road shortly before 9pm.

Detective Senior Sergeant Rod Findlay said police believed Mr O’Ryan had been living in bushland. He said officers located him near the lookout at Tyers, in the area on which the search had been focused. Mr O’Ryan was taken to Morwell police station to be interviewed in relation to the weekend attack.

The three family members remain at the Alfred Hospital. Keith O’Ryan is in a critical but stable condition, while Paul O’Ryan and Janine O’Ryan are in serious but stable conditions.

Senior Sergeant Findlay thanked members of the public for helping police locate Mr O’Ryan. He said a passer-by who had seen media coverage contacted police, leading to the arrest, and described public support during the search as overwhelming.
