According to Cnbc, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will lead a delegation to the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, raising hopes for a diplomatic solution to Iran’s war with the United States and Israel. Pezeshkian is due to address the assembly and outline Iran’s position on international developments, with particular attention to the conflict.
The Iranian president is also expected to hold talks with leaders of several countries on the sidelines of the gathering, scheduled for Sept. 22 to 26, and 28. The delegation’s planned attendance lifted market sentiment on Monday, with stocks rising, oil prices easing and global bond yields falling sharply.
U.S. President Donald Trump has said he would be open to meeting Pezeshkian during the assembly, but has warned that Iran must reach a deal. Trump told Fox News on Sunday that the alternatives were “wiping Iran out” or allowing its economy to “rot” unless the sides agree. Iran’s military, meanwhile, said its intelligence indicated that the U.S. and its allies were preparing a large-scale strike and warned of retaliation across the Middle East.
Diplomatic hopes have also been complicated by regional tensions. Iran-backed Houthi militants claimed missile and drone attacks on Riyadh on Saturday, triggering the first air-raid alert in the Saudi capital since fighting escalated in July. Saudi authorities said they intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile, with no casualties or damage reported.
Oil prices have pulled back as traders anticipate a recovery in Saudi energy shipments, but Eurasia Group analysts said prices would remain elevated despite U.S. progress moving oil through the Strait of Hormuz. The firm forecast Brent crude at $90 to $110 per barrel through the rest of the year, saying stronger flows would not resolve the wider market deficit. Tehran has said it will not reopen the strait until Washington meets commitments in the June memorandum, including lifting the naval blockade of Iranian ports, easing sanctions, unfreezing assets and ending U.S. military threats.
