According to ABC News, Australian driver Oscar Piastri has received a three-place grid penalty after stewards found he impeded Red Bull’s Liam Lawson during qualifying for the Italian Formula 1 Grand Prix.

The McLaren driver had qualified third but will start sixth at Monza. Piastri, seventh in the drivers’ standings, will line up on the third row alongside Red Bull four-time world champion Max Verstappen.

The penalty leaves Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton on the second row, behind pole-sitter Pierre Gasly and Mercedes driver George Russell. Gasly secured the first pole position of his career for Renault-owned Alpine with a lap of one minute and 21.786 seconds, 0.060 seconds faster than Russell.

Gasly, who won at Monza in 2020, said the result was special after nine years pursuing a pole opportunity. He led Q1 and was fourth quickest in Q2 before completing the final flying lap among the pole contenders.

Mercedes championship leader Kimi Antonelli qualified seventh but is set to start towards the back because of engine penalties. ABC Sport will run a live blog of the Italian Grand Prix from 9pm AEST on Sunday.
