Arabic version: الشرطة تبحث عن شخصين بعد إطلاق النار على ضابط في نوتنغهام
According to BBC News, detectives are searching for two suspects after a police officer was shot in Nottingham city centre. Nottinghamshire Police said the officer approached two people in Angel Row shortly before 04:50 BST on Sunday. He is being treated in hospital for a wound to his foot.
Police said a man and a woman fled the scene. A firearm was found within the cordon, while Angel Row has been closed and a large police scene remains in place. The cordon has also been extended to St James’s Street. Police cars, cones and items left on the road were visible along the street, which is lined with fast-food stores and shops.
Assistant Chief Constable Claire Rukas described the shooting as a “shocking incident” and a reminder of the dangers officers can face while protecting the public. She said her thoughts were with the injured officer, his family and colleagues, and urged anyone with information to share it without delay, saying even a small detail could assist the investigation.
Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner Gary Godden thanked members of the public who helped the officer and said firearms incidents of this kind were extremely rare. Nottingham City Council leader Neghat Khan said the council was working alongside police to support the investigation. Nottingham East MP Nadia Whittome, the Police Federation of England and Wales, and East Midlands Ambulance Service also sent messages of support and wished the officer a speedy recovery.
