According to ABC News, police are investigating an armed disturbance involving up to 100 people in Wadeye, a remote Northern Territory community about 250 kilometres south-west of Darwin.

An NT Police spokesperson said officers responded at about 11:45pm to reports of a conflict between two family groups. A number of people were allegedly armed with compound bows, spears and metal objects.

During the disturbance, a 22-year-old man suffered serious injuries after he was allegedly struck in the back with a three-pronged spear, the spokesperson said. Police entered a residence, extracted the man safely and escorted him to the Wadeye health clinic for treatment.

A vehicle near the rear of the property was also allegedly set on fire after members of one group surrounded it. Police had not identified the vehicle’s owner.

Additional police resources were recalled to duty to help restore order, while investigations continued. The incident followed another violent clash in Wadeye on August 16, when officers used pepper spray after armed men allegedly threw rocks, window louvres and metal bars, and one person allegedly fired an arrow at a police car.
