Arabic version: البحث عن مطلق النار البالغ من العمر 89 عامًا بعد هجوم أثينا
A manhunt has been launched in Athens for an 89-year-old suspect following a shooting spree which left five people injured. According to BBC News, the violence began at a social security agency in Petralona, where the attacker shot an employee in the leg.
The suspect then travelled to a nearby courthouse in Ampelokipi, where a further four people were reportedly injured before fleeing the scene. Authorities reported that he left a shotgun behind after the attacks. The motive for the shooting remains unclear as police continue their investigation.
A heavy police presence has been established at both locations. Stratis Dounias, head of the judiciary employees’ union in Athens, confirmed that the four women injured at the courthouse suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Gun violence is relatively rare in Greece, where firearm ownership is allowed but heavily regulated. The ongoing search for the suspect highlights the unusual nature of this incident in the country.
