According to ABC News, police are searching for the mother of a newborn baby boy whose body was found in a garbage bin in Auburn, in Sydney’s west.

Emergency services were called to Harrow Road at 11:20am on Monday after reports that a baby’s body had been found. Acting Superintendent Darren Sly said a member of the public discovered the infant while using garbage bins.

Police said the unclothed baby boy was found inside a plastic bag in a bin at a unit block. Investigations are continuing into whether the baby was born alive, and authorities said the body may have been in the bin for up to 36 hours.

A crime scene has been established. Police have appealed for the infant’s mother to come forward, saying their priority is her welfare rather than possible police action. They urged her to attend her nearest hospital for urgent care.
