According to ABC News, Tasmania’s Pooley Wines won Best in Show at the Sydney Royal Wine Show with its 2024 Pooley Syrah, as the event marked its 200th anniversary.

A panel of 31 judges assessed more than 1,500 wines across 55 classes from around Australia. The Coal River winery also received the Best Red and Best Shiraz trophies, becoming the first Tasmanian shiraz to win those awards.

Chair of judges Mike De Iuliis said cool-climate wines, including the Pooley Syrah, were a highlight of this year’s show. “It really demonstrates that these amazing wines can come from anywhere in this country,” he said.

The inaugural Sydney Royal Wine Show was held in 1826, when the winner received a small gold medal for the best sample of colonial wine from that year’s vintage. Show chair Angus Barnes said the competition helped producers benchmark their wines and supported the industry’s development over two centuries.

Mr De Iuliis said the industry faced pressure as global per-capita wine consumption fell from 4 litres in 1990 to 2.7 litres in 2023, according to Wine Australia. He said the show could help by introducing people to higher-quality wines.
