According to ABC News, Powerhouse Parramatta has revealed its full program for its November 7 grand opening, with more than 3,000 objects from Australia and around the world being installed. The museum will launch with five exhibitions, including immersive works, First Nations-led storytelling and displays examining flight, shopping centres and design.
British artist Es Devlin will present five major works in an exhibition titled The Turning. Its centrepiece, Forest of Us, is a light-filled labyrinth of mirrors that invites visitors to explore visual symmetries between trees and human lungs. The exhibition will also include Memory Palace, an immersive 3D cityscape, and Collective Portrait, where visitors can draw portraits of strangers.
The Dark, designed for children, will be housed in a meteorite-like installation and feature more than 800 objects, including minerals, a crystal tunnel and objects that make noise. It will also show personal objects loaned by 100 children from across Western Sydney, alongside their stories. The First Nations-led exhibition Overflow will feature films by Kamilaroi director Ivan Sen about Aboriginal custodianship of oceans, rivers and other waterways in NSW. A large platform with water at its centre will allow audiences to “walk on water”.
The previously announced Task Eternal will explore the human ambition to defy gravity through items including a NASA moon rock, Leonardo da Vinci drawings of flying machines and a replica Avro 504K, the first Qantas plane. The Mall, across two storeys, will trace the modern shopping centre’s evolution, including Western Sydney’s role as the birthplace of Westfield. Visitors under 16 will receive free entry to all exhibitions. Four of the five exhibitions will be free to the public, while Task Eternal will have an undisclosed fee for visitors aged 16 and over.
