Arabic version: سوانز يفوز في مباراتي الجولة المزدوجة على ملعب إس سي جي بعد أسبوع مضطرب
According to ABC News, the Sydney Swans’ men’s and women’s teams won at the SCG on Sunday following a tumultuous week for the club. The AFLW side beat Essendon by 24 points before the men’s team defeated North Melbourne by 53 points.
The double-header was overshadowed by a scandal that resulted in five men’s players — Isaac Heeney, Nick Blakey, Chad Warner, Riley Bice and James Jordon — being stood down for breaching team standards. Some supporters outside the SCG said they were torn over whether to leave before the men’s match, while others hoped the games could help unify the club.
A threatened walkout did not occur in large numbers. The men’s players received a standing ovation at full-time, while veteran defender Dane Rampe was seen in tears after the final siren. The AFLW match drew a club-record crowd of 16,672.
Swans captain Callum Mills told Fox Footy he was grateful to supporters for sticking with the team. He said replacement players had been “amazing” and that the club’s system showed anyone brought into the side could do the job. Mills also said, “Bring on finals.”
