On Monday, President Salva Kirr Mayardit of South Sudan traveled to Djibouti to attend the IGAD Summit meeting at the IGAD headquarters. The purpose of the meeting is to address the ongoing conflict in Sudan and exchange ideas on how to effectively manage the situation. The conflict, which has been raging for three months, has resulted in the displacement of thousands of Sudanese people to neighboring countries. The leaders, including President William Ruto of Kenya and President Ismail Omar Guelleh of Djibouti, have been tasked by the regional bloc to intervene swiftly in the Sudan crisis.
Despite the consistent calls from the region for the two warring factions to cease hostilities and engage in diplomatic negotiations, the diplomatic efforts have not been widely respected. In this context, President Salva Kirr, with his significant influence, has been given a prominent role to persuade his Sudanese counterpart. Despite their historical and cultural ties, the two countries have experienced separate paths after South Sudan gained independence. However, they share many similarities, particularly in language, as a significant portion of South Sudanese people have Arabic backgrounds due to their prolonged coexistence.
President Kirr recently met with General Burhan’s delegation to discuss possible ways to end the war in Sudan. This engagement highlights President Kirr’s dedication to promoting peace and stability in the region.
In addition to the Sudan crisis, the IGAD heads of state will also address other regional challenges during the meeting. They will discuss issues related to regional security, the threats posed by floods, and the devastating impact of drought on the agricultural sector within the bloc. Despite the ongoing conflict, General Burhan remains the head of IGAD.
President William Ruto, who recently closed down the Kenyan embassy in Sudan due to the escalating violence, will be among the leaders participating in the meeting. The collective efforts of the three leaders aim to find sustainable solutions for the crises in Sudan and the wider region, ensuring stability and prosperity for all.
