According to Cnbc, private-sector employers added 86,000 jobs in October, matching September’s downwardly revised total and coming in above the Dow Jones estimate of 75,000. ADP said the results pointed to steady job growth, with hiring gains spread across sectors.

Service industries drove much of the increase. Trade, transportation and utilities added 39,000 jobs, while education and health services gained 28,000 and leisure and hospitality added 19,000. Financial activities rose by 15,000 jobs, construction added 13,000, and other services increased by 10,000.

Some sectors posted losses. Professional and business services shed 27,000 jobs, natural resources and mining declined by 8,000, and information services lost 2,000. By employer size, companies with 50 to 499 workers added 33,000 jobs, while small businesses added 28,000 and large businesses gained 24,000.

Pay growth remained stronger for workers who changed jobs. Job changers recorded a 4.8% annual gain, while workers overall saw a 3.2% base-pay increase and a 4.7% annual rise in gross pay. Pay for employees staying in their roles increased 3%.

ADP chief economist Nela Richardson said employers of all sizes were hiring and that job changers were drawn by bonuses, overtime, more hours and higher base pay. The report comes before the Bureau of Labor Statistics releases its October nonfarm payrolls count Friday; economists surveyed by Dow Jones expect a gain of 59,000 jobs after September’s 29,000 increase.
