A young girl has died and her siblings have been removed from her Adelaide home as police investigate whether her death was caused by criminal neglect.

The six-year-old girl, whose name has been given only as Charlie, was taken to the Lyell McEwin Hospital by paramedics on Friday morning after being found unresponsive at her Munno Para home.

She died soon after arrival.

Police have declared it a major crime and Taskforce Prime has been formed.

The little girl’s death is being investigated as a case of criminal neglect causing death. The Seven Network reports she had multiple health conditions.

Four other children aged between seven and 16, and an adult sibling aged 29, have also been removed from the home. The taskforce will also investigate criminal neglect charges relating to them.

South Australian authorities have confirmed the child’s family had contact with several government agencies, including police, before her death.

SA Police Deputy Commissioner Linda Williams said the extent of the interactions would form part of the investigation. She said police would allocate all the necessary resources to determine what happened and whether any charges would be laid.

“We want to understand what happened to Charlie and how she ended up in the circumstances that she did,” Deputy Commissioner Williams said.

“The death of any person is tragic, but the death of a young child, a six-year-old girl, obviously causes concern for everybody to want to know how this occurred.”

She said conditions in the Munno Para were described as poor but was unable to elaborate.

Acting Premier Susan Close said, as an immediate response to the case, the government had ordered a review of the interactions between government agencies and the family over the past couple of years.

“The review will encompass the chronology of the services delivered and the agencies engaged,” Ms Close said.

“It’s important not to pre-judge what that review will find.

“What we need to do is go through the process and ask what interactions occurred, could they have been any different and are there any lessons.”

The police taskforce will also conduct a coronial investigation into Charlie’s death.

Police said more information about the investigation would be released in coming days.

Criminal neglect causing death has a maximum possible sentence of life in prison.
