After a suicide bombing at a Shia educational centre in a Hazara neighbourhood in Kabul on 30 September 2022, protests erupted around the world calling governments to play a role in stopping the systemic genocide of Hazara in Afghanistan. The Hazara people are a Shia Muslim ethnic minority from the Hazarajat region in Central Afghanistan who have been persecuted since the late 1800s.
In Sydney, the World Hazara Council organized a protest in Belmore Park on Saturday, 8 October 2022 in which the recent suicide bombing was decried and a call to action was demanded to allow Hazaras, especially young girls, to dream and receive their right to education. The protest was attended by hundreds of people despite the rain, including Chris Bowen MP, Minister of Climate and Energy, Andrew Charlton MP for Parramatta, and Councillor Diane Colman of Cumberland City Council.
