A public memorial celebrating the life of ABC presenter James Valentine is taking place at Sydney’s Town Hall. The service features contributions from colleagues, family, friends, and music icons, commemorating Valentine’s impact on Australian radio.
Valentine, who passed away at the age of 64 last month using voluntary assisted dying, had a distinguished career spanning over 30 years at the ABC. He was best known for hosting the Afternoons show on 702 ABC Sydney, where he developed a unique approach to talkback radio. According to ABC News, the memorial includes an audio montage highlighting his career and a jazz band performing live.
The Governor-General of Australia, Sam Mostyn, recounted her experiences with Valentine, noting that he was the first broadcaster to interview her after she took office. Just days before his death, Valentine was made a member of the Order of Australia (AM) at a private ceremony.
Attendees at the memorial include notable figures from the media and arts, reflecting on Valentine’s whimsical and creative contributions to the industry. The event aims to be a celebration of his legacy, focusing on the joy he brought to listeners during his tenure at the ABC.
