Arabic version: احتجاج عام على حكم الأولاد في قضية الاغتصاب
French rape survivor Gisèle Pelicot expressed her deep shock at the decision not to jail three teenage boys convicted of raping two girls in Hampshire. The incidents occurred in November 2024 and January 2025, involving two 14-year-olds and a 13-year-old. According to BBC News, the attorney general is set to review the youth rehabilitation orders given by the judge, who aimed to avoid criminalizing the “very young” offenders.
Pelicot, who previously endured a harrowing experience herself, spoke out after headlining the Hay Festival in Wales. She voiced her concern that the boys were allowed to remain free while the victims continue to suffer. “Rape is a crime and justice has an essential role,” she stated, emphasizing the need for accountability.
The sentencing has prompted significant public backlash, with one of the victims describing the decision as akin to a “rock straight in my face.” Pelicot praised the bravery of the girls, highlighting the difficulty of coming forward after such traumatic events.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer labeled the case as “appalling,” commending the extraordinary courage displayed by the victims. The sentences, which included youth rehabilitation orders and curfews, are currently under review, with the attorney general having 28 days to decide on a potential appeal.
