According to ABC News, Queensland councils are marking six years until the opening ceremony of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Olympic opening ceremony is scheduled for July 23, 2032, with the Paralympic Games beginning on August 24.
Brisbane City Council has installed an official countdown clock in the Queen Street Mall. Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said most host cities received a countdown clock a year before the Games, but Brisbane “likes to do things differently”. He described the installation as an exciting milestone for a place where people gather for shopping, food and meeting friends.
Brisbane 2032 president Andrew Liveris called the clock’s installation a “goosebump moment”. He said the organisation was working to ensure the event delivered a legacy impact for Queensland and Brisbane. Mr Liveris said he was confident the city would be ready, describing six years as sufficient in construction terms, even in stress conditions.
The Queensland government still needs to build seven new venues and upgrade another 10 before the Games. Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie said there was “no time to waste”, citing infrastructure, venues, roads, rail and transportation as work that must be delivered.
Brisbane City Council has also released a legacy vision containing 21 key initiatives. They include unlocking up to 50,000 new homes before 2032, creating more green and community spaces near major infrastructure projects, and expanding the city’s public transport network. In Moreton Bay, council unveiled Milly, a nine-metre replica of Matilda, the kangaroo mascot from the 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games, at Mill Water Park in Petrie beside the future Moreton Bay Indoor Sports Centre.
