According to ABC News, Queensland is set for an early taste of spring this weekend, with sunshine forecast across most of the state and temperatures expected to rise as September begins. Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist David Crocker said inland areas would be quite warm, while most of the state could expect plenty of sunshine. A few showers are forecast for coastal areas, particularly around the Sunshine Coast, K’gari and the north tropical coast.

Showers are expected to intensify on Sunday, especially along the north coast. An upper trough is forecast over the Sunshine Coast on Sunday, bringing heavier showers before moving inland towards Kingaroy and Gayndah during the afternoon. Brisbane is likely to avoid most of the wet weather, with partly cloudy conditions and temperatures in the mid-20s, although an isolated shower remains possible on Sunday as rain moves across the Sunshine Coast.

Further north, conditions from Townsville to Bowen are expected to remain mostly dry. Strong winds and hazardous surf are forecast from the Townsville coast to areas north of Port Douglas, however. Mr Crocker said strong wind warnings would be in place on the peninsula on Saturday, with winds expected to ease in the following days. South-east Queensland is also forecast to experience hazardous surf early next week, with swells reaching 1.5 to 2 metres.

Westerly winds are expected to carry warmer air from Central Queensland towards the coast next week. Temperatures in Brisbane and Ipswich are predicted to nudge towards the 30s as hot air masses build over Western Queensland and inland Australia. Mr Crocker described the weather pattern as pretty stable, while noting that a final burst of cold air later in September could not be entirely ruled out.
