According to The Guardian, a Queensland man has been charged with murdering his three-month-old son after the infant died in hospital this week. The boy, from the Ipswich area west of Brisbane, had been taken to hospital with what police described as “significant internal injuries” and was later transferred to the Queensland children’s hospital.

Police said detectives from the Child Protection Investigation Unit began investigating on 1 October after hospital staff reported the matter. The child died almost a week after being admitted and had been on life support.

Uneeb Ullah, 28, was arrested on Tuesday evening and charged with murder, designated a domestic violence offence. His case was briefly mentioned in court on Wednesday. Ullah was not required to appear, did not enter a plea, and was remanded in custody after his Legal Aid solicitor, Kirstyn Nicholson, did not apply for bail.

The matter is due to return to court on 26 October. Police prosecutor Ben Messina requested that the case be stood down because more material could potentially be provided, while the magistrate agreed it could be re-mentioned if additional charges were laid.

Detective Inspector Michael Manago described the case as a tragic event involving a vulnerable child. He said police had spoken with the parents several times and would examine the nature and dynamics of their relationship. Manago said the child’s mother was extremely upset and that police were offering support. The boy was the couple’s only child.
