Arabic version: العثور على النائب في كوينزلاند جيمي سوليفان ميتًا عن عمر يناهز 44 عامًا
Queensland MP Jimmy Sullivan was found dead at his home, prompting condolences to his family from all sides of politics. The independent MP for the Queensland electorate of Stafford in Brisbane’s north was discovered by police at around 10:15 PM on Thursday night. His death is not being treated as suspicious, according to authorities. According to SBS News, Sullivan was 44 years old at the time of his passing.
Premier David Crisafulli expressed shock and sadness at the news, stating, “Queenslanders will be shocked to hear of the sudden passing of member for Stafford Jimmy Sullivan. On behalf of all Queenslanders, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family during this difficult time.” His death will trigger a by-election for the Stafford electorate.
Sullivan had a long political career, first being elected as a Labor MP in 2020. He was the son of Terry Sullivan, a former state Labor MP. His political journey saw him serve as an assistant to the minister for justice and veterans affairs and as chief of staff to the former attorney-general. His tenure was marked by challenges, including being disendorsed by Labor in May 2025, which forced him to the crossbench.
The Labor party also expressed their grief, stating, “All of us in the Labor family are in shock today at the sudden and tragic passing of our friend and colleague, Jimmy Sullivan. We honour his memory and his deep connection to his local community where he was born, raised and honoured to serve his whole life.”
Sullivan’s parliamentary career was not without difficulties. He had recently faced personal challenges, including dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder. Police were called to his home following an alleged domestic incident shortly after the 2024 state election, although no charges were laid. A report will be prepared for the coroner regarding Sullivan’s death.
