It’s the end of an era as legend, Rafael Nadal, announced his retirement from professional tennis. Nadal will retire after next month’s Davis Cup Finals. The Spaniard has had a remarkable career in tennis winning 22 Grand Slams, with fourteen slams won at the French Open.

“It is obviously a difficult decision, one that has taken me some time to make,” Nadal said. “But, in this life, everything has a beginning and an end. I think it is the appropriate time to put an end to a career that has been long and much more successful than I could have ever imagined,” Nadal expressed in a video that was posted on many social media platforms.

Unfortunately, Nadal’s illustrious career has taken a toll on him physically with injuries. At the 2023 Australian Open, Nadal suffered a hip injury that caused him to miss the French Open and undergo surgery. As news of Nadal’s retirement spread across the tennis and sports world, tributes started popping up from fellow tennis greats and sports icons. “What a career, Rafa! I always hoped this day would never come,” Federer said on Instagram. Furthermore, on X, Djokovic shared two photos of him, thanking Nadal.

Fellow Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz also wrote a heartfelt message, “From the boy who watched you on television and dreamed of becoming a tennis player to the one who had the immense gift of playing by your side at Roland Garros representing Spain in the Olympics. Thank you so much for being an example on every level, your legacy is unrepeatable. I have enjoyed you very much and I will miss you very much when you leave after the Davis Cup, Rafa!”

Additionally, Tennis rival Nick Kyrgios wrote on X,” We had our differences, but you were one hell of a warrior. Best wishes and good luck with whatever comes next.” Athletes from other sports also sent a message to Nadal such as Cristiano Ronaldo who wrote on Instagram, “Your dedication, passion and incredible talent have inspired millions of people around the world. It has been an honour to follow your journey and to be able to consider you a friend. Congratulations on an exceptional career and happy retirement.”

However, the good news is that Nadal has one last shot to showcase his talent and athleticism on court, as he will be representing Spain in the upcoming Davis Cup.  “I am very excited that my last tournament will be the Davis Cup and representing my country. I think I’ve come full circle because one of my first joys as a professional tennis player was the final in Sevilla in 2004,” the Spaniard emphasized. In addition, to his record breaking Grand Slam victories, Rafael Nadal won the Australian Open twice during his career.
