According to BBC News, tennis great Rafael Nadal is set to join the board of directors at Spanish football club Real Madrid. The club’s members will be asked to approve the 40-year-old’s appointment at a meeting later this month.

Nadal retired in 2024 after winning 22 Grand Slam titles and two Olympic gold medals, as well as helping Spain win five Davis Cups. A boyhood Real Madrid fan, he holds the club membership number 67,778 and shared a childhood photo of himself wearing a club kit.

Real Madrid described Nadal as “one of the greatest legends in the history of sport and one of the most admired and recognised Spanish athletes in the world”. The club said it was a source of pride that he would join its board and contribute to its present and future.

In a post on X, Nadal thanked president Florentino Perez and the board for the proposal. He said he had accepted it with “great excitement, a desire to learn, and a willingness to contribute everything I can.” His responsibilities on the board are not yet clear.

Perez was re-elected for a new four-year term as Real president in June. Real Madrid are third in the league after 11 games, three points behind defending champions Barcelona.
