One of Sydney’s most popular cultural events, Ramadan Nights Lakemba is back with a spectacular month-long celebration.

More than 75 local businesses will transform Lakemba’s Haldon Street into a vibrant, global food bazaar every evening from Tuesday 21 March to Thursday 20 April, from dusk until 3am.

Food-lovers will experience the tantalising flavours from several continents in just one night, with traditional cuisine from Indonesia, Burma, Pakistan, Lebanon, Cocos Islands, Syria and more.

More than a million visitors are expected to turn out, with many travelling from interstate and overseas.

City of Canterbury Bankstown Mayor Khal Asfour said last year’s event was a monumental success and has put Ramadan Nights Lakemba on the map as an event of national significance.

“Last year, we saw more than 1.2 million visitors flock to the streets of Lakemba throughout the holy month of Ramadan. That’s more than the Sydney Royal Easter Show!” Mayor Asfour said.

“Thousands gathered to celebrate Ramadan with their families and friends, while non-Muslims alike were welcomed for a culturally eye-opening experience. It’s an important religious event on the Islamic calendar.”

This year, Ramadan Nights Lakemba has been recognised and supported by Multicultural NSW, who are partnering with the City of Canterbury Bankstown.

“We’re thrilled that the State Government have acknowledged the significance of this event which means so much to not only our community, but to the abundance of tourists who are drawn from all over Australia,” Mayor Asfour said.

“This partnership will mean we can ensure the sustainability of the event and keep Ramadan Nights as a safe and joyous event for our community.”

Visitors who are planning to come with family, or just want to avoid the crowds, are encouraged to come along on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings and to come early in the evening, as stalls are open from dusk.

Public transport is available via the T3 Bankstown line to Lakemba Station as well as free shuttle buses which will be running every night from 6.30pm-12.30am.
