Arabic version: «راي غَن» يمزج بين النوار والخيال العلمي ورسوم العائلة المتحركة
According to The Guardian, Brad Bird’s Ray Gunn is a smart, witty and humane animated fantasy that combines old-school family entertainment with film-noir mystery and retro-futurist design.
Sam Rockwell voices Raymond Gunn, an ex-police officer turned private detective whose hard-edged image conceals a softer side. Ray works with Eyera, an alien voiced by Tom Waits, in a city where aliens face racist bigotry, including exclusion from a humans-only hospital.
The story brings Ray into contact with Venus Nova, a singing star voiced by Scarlett Johansson. Her fourth husband, Arnold, voiced by Bobby Cannavale, is involved in a scheme using Venus’s stand-in double to create false evidence that could secure a profitable divorce.
The film’s world features flying cars, moving walkways, hologram billboards and laser-particle firearms, while retaining visual echoes of earlier eras through bulbous vehicles and black-and-white television images. Its plot also includes Venus’s manager and first husband Barry, voiced by Alan Tudyk, and nightclub owner and mob boss Slugsy, voiced by Matt Berry.
Among the set pieces are a zero-gravity club sequence in which dancers and lovers float through the air, and a weapon that temporarily scrambles the limbs of its targets. The film also addresses algorithmic advertising and data privacy.
