Arabic version: تجاوز عدد المتقدمين القياسي لماراثون لندن 2027 1.3 مليون
A historic number of applicants has emerged for the 2027 London Marathon, with a total of 1,338,544 individuals applying through the public ballot. This figure not only sets a new record but also surpasses last year’s 1,133,813 applicants. The marathon is scheduled to take place on 25 April 2027, and follows the 2026 event, which saw a record 59,830 finishers and was recognized as the largest annual fundraising event globally.
According to BBC News, Hugh Brasher, chief executive of London Marathon Events, expressed that the overwhelming interest underscores London’s status as the world’s most sought-after marathon. He emphasized the event’s mission to inspire individuals of all ages and abilities to engage in physical activity.
The results from the ballot will be announced in early July, with places being allocated through a random draw. Notably, this year marks the first time that over a million applications have been submitted from the UK alone, with a balanced representation of male and female registrants.
Additionally, organizers are contemplating the possibility of expanding the event to two days, Saturday and Sunday, for 2027. Brasher indicated that a decision on this proposal could be made by the end of May. He highlighted that such a change would bring significant economic and social benefits, estimating over £400 million in total impact and more than £150 million for charities. However, he noted that this would be a one-time occurrence, and careful planning is required to address potential disruptions to the city.
The recent 2026 marathon was historic, featuring Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe completing the first sub-two-hour marathon in a competitive race, alongside Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa breaking her own women’s world record.
