The first open sale of tickets for the 2026 World Cup has revealed that FIFA is charging up to $10,990 (£8,333) for a seat at the final. This price is believed to be the highest ever for general admission to a football match. According to BBC News, the initial ticket prices had been significantly lower, with the maximum listed at $1,550 (£1,174) in the World Cup bid book and $8,680 (£6,581) during the first ticket release last December.

Ticket prices for the World Cup final have surged by as much as 38% in the latest sale compared to the previous release. Category two tickets have increased from $5,575 (£4,227) to $7,380 (£5,596), while category three tickets jumped from $4,185 (£3,173) to $5,785 (£4,386). The latest ticketing strategy also employs dynamic pricing, which adjusts costs based on demand.

The open sale began with technical issues, causing frustration among fans eager to secure tickets. Many encountered glitches that misdirected them into a queue for “PMA tickets”, reserved for fans of that week’s play-off winners. Once access was granted, supporters faced long wait times, with one report indicating a wait of over six hours and 14 minutes.

FIFA’s ticketing approach has drawn criticism, especially for not providing advance notice of available games or prices. The lack of affordable ticket options has also raised concerns, as free tickets for assistants of wheelchair users have not been made available, forcing them to pay full price.

As the ticketing process continues, FIFA’s resale platform is set to reopen, which may lead to even higher prices due to additional fees for buyers and sellers. The fluctuating availability of tickets suggests that fans may need to remain vigilant for new releases leading up to the tournament.
