The City of Canterbury Bankstown is encouraging residents to pull out their gloves and get ready to join in Australia’s biggest clean up campaign.

More than 50 clean up locations have been identified across Canterbury-Bankstown including schools, businesses, parklands and river foreshores this Clean Up Australia Day, on Sunday 5 March.

Of these 50 locations, more than 20 are open for the public to join in.

Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Khal Asfour urged residents to get involved and be part of the groundswell of support against littering.

“I’m always so proud to see how our community comes together to help make a big impact,” Mayor Asfour said.

“Even if you only have an hour to spare, I’d encourage everyone to join their local clean up site and get involved and meet like-minded people.”

Having a clean and green City has always been a priority for Council and our waterways are not to be neglected.

Council has more than 72 gross pollutant traps and 90 biofilters which remove around 300 tonnes of waste and excess nutrients from our waterways each year.

“We now have 3 litter booms on one section of the Cooks River helping to remove rubbish and other pollutants,” Mayor Asfour said.

Mayor Asfour said since installing a third litter boom in May 2021, more than 324 cubic metres of litter has been captured and removed.

“The amount of waste recovered has been eye-watering and has certainly made a difference to the health of the river.”

If you can’t make it to one of the clean ups, there are plenty more opportunities to tune into our natural environment through Council’s ‘We Love Our Rivers’ initiative.

From March-May each year, Council hosts and promotes a series of events to explore and help clean up the rivers in our City, which are home to a range or endangered plants and animals.

Whether you’re interested in kayaking with the Cooks River Canoe Club to paddle against plastic, or joining us on a Biodiversity walk to see some of Sydney’s best-preserved secret, the Wolli Creek Regional Park, there’s sure to be a way you can get involved!
