According to BBC News, Welsh gymnast Ruby Evans won Wales’ first gold medal of the 2026 Commonwealth Games by taking the floor final in Glasgow after a difficult start to her competition.

The 19-year-old Cardiff athlete had left Glasgow International Arena in tears after finishing sixth in the individual all-around on Sunday. She had been second after two disciplines, but a faltering beam routine that included a fall ended her medal hopes. Evans also withdrew from the uneven bars on Monday to rest a shoulder injury.

Two days later, Evans returned for the final day of gymnastics competition. She finished seventh on beam before delivering her floor routine as the last of eight competitors. The performance secured her place in Welsh sporting history as the first Welsh woman to win an artistic gymnastics Commonwealth Games gold medal.

Evans said she used frustration as motivation in her signature event. “I feel like I perform better when I have a bit of fire in me,” she said. “It’s like a completely different feeling. I went out there like my dragon was absolutely firing.”

Her victory followed a strong period in the sport. Evans was the youngest member of Team GB’s gymnastics squad at the Paris Olympics in 2024, where Britain finished fourth, and she won floor silver at the 2025 World Championships in Jakarta. She will compete at the European Championships later this year.

After the medal ceremony and Wales’ first gold-winning anthem of the Games, Evans headed to Team Wales house to celebrate with family and friends. “I feel relieved it’s done,” she said. “It’s a good feeling and I feel so calm.”
