Residents of Kerchomya, a small village in Russia’s Komi Republic, report significant depopulation as men leave to fight in Ukraine. According to The Guardian, the village, home to just more than 700 people, has seen 56 men enlist in the military, representing nearly one-third of its working-age male population.

The village head, Olga Bulysheva, confirmed that twelve of these soldiers have been killed, with several others unaccounted for. This loss has left families grieving and created labor shortages in a community that already struggled with economic challenges.

Many residents describe a stark transformation in their daily lives, with streets feeling increasingly deserted. Alina, a local, noted that her visits home reveal fewer people on the streets, attributing this to the ongoing conflict. The situation has made it difficult to fill essential jobs in local farming, postal services, and a new bread factory.

Despite the hardships, the community remains largely supportive of the war effort. Local gatherings now often center around memorials for fallen soldiers, and educational programs have shifted to reflect a more patriotic narrative. Social media channels that once celebrated village life are now filled with obituaries and recruitment advertisements.

As the war continues, the village faces an uncertain future, grappling with the dual challenges of loss and the need for economic stability. With casualties rising and recruitment slowing, the sustainability of military enlistment from rural areas like Kerchomya is increasingly in question.
